ALS

When ALS takes the strength to speak, keep the voice.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) weakens the muscles that move the body — including the ones for speaking, swallowing and breathing — while thinking and understanding are usually preserved. Speech tends to grow slower, quieter and harder to understand over time. ExpressAgain keeps a person heard with low-effort, tap-to-speak phrases, and, by recording a voice early, lets the app keep speaking in a voice that sounds like their own.

What ALS Does to Speech

The words are all there. The muscles stop carrying them.

In ALS the trouble is usually not language but dysarthria — the tongue, lips, jaw, voice box and breathing muscles weaken, so speech becomes slurred, nasal, soft and slow, and talking itself is tiring. For some people speech is the first thing to change; for others it comes later. Either way there is usually time to prepare, which is why speech-language pathologists encourage voice recording and a communication tool early, before it is urgent.

Why It Works

Prepare the voice now — spend less effort later.

Every message in ExpressAgain is a recognize-and-tap choice, not a struggle to form each word, so a person can keep communicating without exhausting themselves as movement and breath change. And because a voice sample recorded while speaking is comfortable lets the app speak in a voice built from their own, the sound of the person stays in the room. Speech therapy and ExpressAgain work side by side — the therapist shapes the strategy, the app is the voice between visits.

Inside ExpressAgain for ALS

Built to grow with you over time.

Keep Your Own Voice

Record a voice sample while speaking is still comfortable. ExpressAgain can then speak chosen phrases in a voice built from yours — so “I love you” still sounds like you.

Low-Effort Selection

Large buttons, extra-large text and short paths, adjustable in Settings — one tap says a whole sentence when hands and breath are tired.

Comfort & Breathing

“I need to breathe,” “I am tired,” help moving, a drink of water, and the small requests that fill a day — said clearly and at full volume.

Symptoms & Medications

Note what is changing in Health Tracking, keep every medication and dose time in Prescriptions, and print a Care Team Report for the clinic visit.

The Home Team

As care needs grow, aides, nurses and therapists who help at home each get a profile, a schedule and the same care plan — and read the Emergency Plan Card.

Feelings & Connection

Tell the people you love how you feel while the words are easy to reach, and hear their voice notes back in the Love Bucket any time.

Who It's For

For the person, the family, and the team around them.

For the person living with ALS

Say what you mean with the least effort possible, in a voice that is still yours, and stay part of every decision about your own care.

For the family

Keep the routine, the medications and the changes you notice in one place — and keep sharing the ordinary, loving moments as the disease changes what a day looks like.

For the care team

Neurology, respiratory, speech, physical and occupational therapy, palliative care and home health each join with a per-discipline code and see the same plan and the same notes.

Your Voice Is Worth Keeping

A voice that still sounds like you.

The way you say “I love you” is part of who you are. A diagnosis does not have to mean losing the sound of yourself, and it never means losing your say. Everything that makes you you is worth holding onto — and worth being heard.

ExpressAgain is a communication and care-coordination tool, not a medical device or treatment, and nothing here is medical advice. For diagnosis, treatment, and care decisions, always talk with your medical team.

Start early. Stay heard.

Everything above works today with the core library. The dedicated ALS phrase library is on the way, built on the same foundation as Aphasia Mode.
