How many hours a week do family members spend coordinating care?

Not published. No data has been collected for this study, so there is no finding to quote. When findings are published they appear on this page, at this address, with the sample size and margin of error beside every number.

The question

In the past week, how many hours did the family member who coordinates a loved one's care spend on coordination alone: calls, scheduling, paperwork, pharmacy and insurance tasks, and updating relatives? Hands-on care is not counted.

Who needs the answer: Families, employers and benefits brokers, and journalists covering family caregiving.

The method

  • A 10-minute online survey of adults who coordinate care for a family member living at home.
  • It asks about last week, not a typical week, to cut down on guessing, and splits the hours by task.
  • It asks whether the coordinator works, and how many hours of paid work were missed.
  • Results are reported as the median and the range of the middle half, not an average a few very high answers could pull.

Sample: At least 400 completed surveys before anything is published; never fewer than 200, with the wider margin of error printed.

Privacy and limits

Anonymous answers. No names, no dates of birth and no diagnosis tied to a person. Only aggregated, anonymized results are published, never a raw answer.

People who answer a newsletter or community survey are not a random sample of U.S. families, and each recruitment channel is reported separately.
