Care hours needed per week

Check the tasks a loved one needs help with, set how often and how long, and see the hours of help needed each week and the gap family can't cover.

  • Stays on your device: nothing you type is sent to ExpressAgain or saved on a server.
  • This tool does math and organizes information. It isn't medical, legal or financial advice. In an emergency, call 911.

Check each task. The numbers that fill in are a starting guess, not a standard: change them to what it really takes.

Leave blank for none.

How to use
  1. Check each task your loved one needs help with. A starting guess for minutes and how often fills in; change it to what it really takes.
  2. Choose per day or per week for each task. Decimals work: 0.5 a day means every other day.
  3. Type the hours family members can cover in a week, all together.
  4. Check Overnight presence or constant supervision if someone needs to be there even between tasks.
  5. Read the weekly hours and the gap, then tap Print the estimate to bring to a family meeting or an agency.
Questions
How do I work out how many hours of care my parent needs?
List each task your parent needs help with, how many times it happens and how long it takes each time. Times per week multiplied by minutes each time, added up across tasks and divided by 60, is the hours of hands-on help each week.
Why does overnight supervision change the answer?
Task times only count hands-on help. If someone has to be in the home overnight or watch constantly, the need is the time being there, which can be up to 24 hours a day or 168 hours a week, no matter how few tasks there are.
Where do the suggested minutes come from?
They are starting guesses so the form is quicker to fill in, not a standard. Change every number to what the task really takes for your loved one.
Does the estimator say what level of care is needed?
No. It adds up the time the family describes. It does not suggest a level of care. A doctor, a care manager or a home care agency's assessment can help decide that.
Does the estimator show what care will cost?
No. It counts hours only and never shows prices or money.
