Snap a business card

Take a photo of a business card and the card reader fills in the person's details; you check them and say where the person belongs: a Partner, the Care team, the Home team, My People, or, for an organization, its Partners.

Where it is. The camera button beside Add a partner on Care Team, beside Add a contact under Doctors, nurses & clinics, beside Add to your home team on the Home team tab, and beside Add person on My People. Snap a card is also on Search and in the phone's Menu drawer. On an organization's Settings, the camera sits beside Add a partner. On a phone it opens the camera; on a computer it opens a file to choose. Choose a photo picks one you already have, and Type it in skips the photo.

Who can use it. Whoever runs the account and caregivers in the family's app, and an organization's administrator on the organization's Settings. A family member or a friend with their own sign-in, and the patient's own sign-in, do not see it, because they cannot add people to these lists.

What the card reader reads. Only what the card prints: first name, last name, title, organization, the phone numbers (Office, Mobile or Fax when the card labels them), email, website, the address on one line, and anything else printed under Notes (for example Hospice liaison, or a second office). Nothing is guessed or looked up. A field the card does not print stays empty. US phone numbers are written as (555) 010-2030 and the email in lower case.

Check this. Each field the card reader was unsure of (small print, glare, a number cut off) is marked Check this with an amber border. The mark goes away when you change the field. First name and Last name are two fields; every field can be changed before anything is saved. The app does not check who the person is; the fields are only what the card says.

If the card cannot be read, the sheet says: Couldn't read this card. Try again with more light, or type it in. The fields are then empty for you to type. Where the card reader is not set up on the server, the sheet says so and the fields are typed in the same way.

Where does this person belong? Under the fields, pick one: Partner (hospice, equipment, pharmacy, anyone who works with the family), Care team (doctors, nurses, clinics: a tap-to-call card), Home team (Add to your home team), or My People (family and friends). On an organization's Settings the one choice is Organization contact, the organization's Partners. The choice opens that list's own form, already filled in: the Add a partner form, a new card under Doctors, nurses & clinics in its editor (a person's card, or the clinic's when the card names no person), the Add to your home team form, or the person's editor on My People. You finish and save there, exactly as when you add someone by hand.

What fits where. A form with one phone field gets the mobile number first (the office number on a Care Team card); the other numbers and the website go in the partner's Notes. An organization contact gets the cell, the office phone and the address split into street, city, state and ZIP when the card prints them that way.

After the save, one line says who was added and where, for example Added Rosa Sample to Partners, with Open the card.

Nothing is sent to the person. Snap a card never emails, texts or invites anyone. Add to your home team sends an invite only when you tick Send by email or Send by text and tap the button, as it always does; on My People, Send invite is in the person's editor, and nothing goes until you tap it.

The photo. The photo is made smaller on your phone, sent to the card reader, and then dropped: it is not stored. Tick Keep a copy of the card before you pick where the person belongs to keep it; it is then stored privately for your circle or your organization, and a line in the partner's Notes points to it. Scans are limited to 20 every 10 minutes for each sign-in.

Step by step

  1. 1On Care Team, tap the camera beside Add a partner, Add a contact or Add to your home team (or beside Add person on My People, or Snap a card on Search or in the Menu drawer).

  3. 3Check each field, especially the ones marked Check this, and fix anything the card reader got wrong.
  4. 4Tick Keep a copy of the card if you want the photo kept.
  5. 5Under Where does this person belong?, tap Partner, Care team, Home team or My People, then finish and save the form that opens.
